Berlin vs Leipzig
Both cities are major eastern German cultural centres with rich histories and thriving creative scenes, but Leipzig retains the affordable, authentic edge that made Berlin famous — before the crowds arrived.

Germany
🎶 Berlin
Berlin is one of Europe's most culturally compelling cities — the remnants of the Wall, the Holocaust Memorial, Museum Island's five world-class museums, the Pergamon Altar, and the Bauhaus Archive are genuinely unmissable. The nightlife around Berghain and the canal bars of Kreuzberg remains legendary. But Berlin has become a victim of its own cool: it is no longer cheap, particularly for accommodation (especially during major festivals and trade fairs), and the most interesting neighbourhoods — Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte — have been heavily gentrified. The tourist circuits around Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate are increasingly commercialised.
Germany
🎨 Leipzig
Leipzig is what Berlin was 20 years ago — a post-industrial eastern German city with an enormous creative scene, incredibly cheap rents, and almost no international tourists. The Plagwitz and Lindenau neighbourhoods are full of artist ateliers, independent galleries, and bars in repurposed factories. The Spinnerei — a former cotton mill — houses 11 contemporary art galleries including internationally recognised painters. Bach composed at the Thomaskirche, and the Gewandhaus Orchestra is one of Europe's finest. The Monday Demonstrations of 1989 that helped topple the GDR began here. A full day out in Leipzig costs roughly what a hotel breakfast costs in Berlin.
