Amsterdam vs Leiden: Skip the Crowds, Find Better
$400–$600 per week
Both cities are Dutch canal cities with world-class museums and classic Golden Age architecture, but Leiden has no tourist crowds, significantly cheaper accommodation, and is just 30 minutes from Amsterdam by train.

🚲 Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam is architecturally stunning — the canal belt, the Golden Age merchants' houses, the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House — and the cycling culture remains genuinely appealing. But overtourism has become a serious problem. The city centre is so saturated with stag parties and cruise-ship groups that the municipality has banned new hotels in the historic centre and is actively discouraging tourists. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum require advance booking weeks ahead. The Red Light District has become a zoo. Hotel prices in the canal ring now regularly exceed London and Paris, and many of the famous 'coffee shops' have restricted entry to Dutch residents.
🌷 Leiden, Netherlands
Leiden is everything Amsterdam was before overtourism — a beautiful Dutch canal city with historic gabled houses, working windmills, and almost no international tourist crowds. Home to the Netherlands' oldest university (1575), the city has a vibrant student population and an exceptional concentration of museums: the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (antiquities, including Egyptian mummies), the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, and Rembrandt's birthplace. The Hortus Botanicus botanical garden is among Europe's oldest. The Tuesday and Saturday markets on the Nieuwe Rijn are authentic and excellent. Leiden is 30 minutes from Amsterdam by direct train.
