🍕 Naples, Italy
Naples is an overwhelming, chaotic, magnificent city — the birthplace of pizza (Pizzeria Brandi, L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele), the gateway to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, and home to the National Archaeological Museum's unrivalled collection of Roman artefacts. The Spaccanapoli street and the historic centro storico are viscerally exciting. But Naples requires navigating real challenges: aggressive scooter traffic, petty theft, and a tourist infrastructure that can feel predatory. Accommodation near the central station is dire quality at high prices, and many tourists feel rushed through the city on their way to Pompeii or the Amalfi ferry.
🏛️ Matera, Italy
Matera is one of the world's truly extraordinary places — an ancient cave city (the Sassi di Matera) carved into a ravine in Basilicata, southern Italy, that has been continuously inhabited for over 9,000 years. Once considered Italy's shame (families lived in the caves in dire poverty until the 1950s), the Sassi are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a deeply atmospheric place to stay and explore. The cave hotels (some of the most remarkable accommodation in Europe), the rupestrian churches carved into the rock, and the Gravina di Matera canyon views at dawn are unforgettable. Matera was European Capital of Culture in 2019 but remains far less visited than comparable Italian sites.
