Nairobi vs Arusha: Skip the Crowds, Find Better
$150–$350 per week
Both cities serve as East African safari gateways with similar access to the continent's greatest wildlife parks, but Arusha is smaller, safer, and sits at the doorstep of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro — Tanzania's crown jewels.

🦒 Nairobi, Kenya
Nairobi is East Africa's largest city and a gateway for Kenya's extraordinary safari circuit — the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo. The city has genuine highlights: the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum, and a growing café and restaurant scene in Karen and Westlands. But Nairobi has a well-earned reputation for urban crime (particularly in the CBD), and the tourist experience is largely defined by getting through the city as efficiently as possible to the national parks. Safari operators here charge significant premiums. The city itself is sprawling, traffic-clogged, and difficult to navigate safely on foot.
🦁 Arusha, Tanzania
Arusha is Tanzania's safari capital — a much smaller, more manageable city than Nairobi sitting at the foot of Mt Meru, with Kilimanjaro visible on clear days. It is the gateway to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire National Park — collectively representing some of Africa's greatest wildlife viewing. The Arusha National Park is right on the doorstep for day visitors. The city has a genuinely good café scene around the Clock Tower, a thriving Maasai market, and the Natural History Museum in the old German boma. Tanzania's tourism is generally considered better regulated and less crime-affected than Nairobi.
